Marriage
- The New Right argue that the nuclear family is in decline. They belive in the Nuclear family system because it is the most benificial for society. EG geographical mobility, Social mobility. female marriage dropped form 30% - 24%. less people want to get married because of eg fear of divorce, secularization
-evaluation: re marriage has risen from 15%to 45% in 2006. showing people still think it is desirable.
-study: Chester says that marriage is in a period of delay, that people are choosing to get married later after a period of cohabitation. 2005 7 in 10 families aimed to get married.
Cohabitation
this is seen at a threat on marriage, this is where two people live together and are in a commited relationship however are not married. This is the fastest growing family type in britain (2.2million)
studies: Burgoyne says that this is only temporary, most people cohabiting aim to get married in the future, but don't for maybe economic reasons.
Fletcher says that cohabiting is the same as the nuclear family because these relationships have the same commitmentas marriage but they do not have the legitimate label of marriage.
Marital Breakdown
-Divorce: the legal termination of a marriage.
-Separation: WHen you're in a marriage however spouses do not live under the same roof.
-empty shell marriage: this is a husband and wife legally together under the same roof however they do not love or have any feelings for each other at all.
Divorce
Change in the laws of marriage allowing woman to marry after the suffarage movement meant that a lot of women divorced their unwanted husbands that they most probably were forced to marry before the emancipation of women.

individualism- people have become more selfish and individual due to not thinking about such things as religion due to secularization and extended family.
Choice- cultural and economic changes means that people have the ability to chose their life style instead of marrying to become economically dependent for example.
conflict - There is a potential clash of what people want for themselves and what they want from a relationship.
