Epidemiology:
The study of health and disease within the total population (rather than an individual) and the risk factors that influence health and disease.
Incidence:
The number of new disease cases in a population that occur over a given period of time.
Prevalence:
The number of all cases (both old and new) of a disease that can be identified within a specific population at a given point in time.
Disease progression:
The change or advancement of periodontal destruction.
Intermittent disease progression:
State of periodontal disease is characterized by periods of disease activity and inactivity (remission).
Risk factors:
factors that modify or amplify likelihood of developing periodontal disease, major established risk factors for periodontitis are specific bacterial pathogens cigarette smoking and diabetes mellitus.
Periodontal Pathogens
bacteria that are capable of infecting the tissues of the epithelium
