The smallest particle of an element is an

Atoms are composed of
protons and neutrons (in the nucleus) and electrons (orbiting around nucleus).
Elements
cannot be broken down into other substances
The atomic number tells the
number of protons and electrons the atom contains
Compounds are
2 or more elements chemically combined,
Examples: H2O, CO2, NaCl
Mixtures are
2 or more substances NOT chemically combined
heterogeneous mixture
can see the different parts,
Example: fruit salad
homogeneous mixture
evenly mixed, can’t see differ parts,
Example: salt water
Mixtures can be easily separated by
filtration, evaporation, magnetism, distillation (boiling)
