Describe 3 components of the image and state what the image resembles.
1) Bounded by two membranes called the nuclear envelope - With nuclear pores (to allow passage of large molecules, such as mRNA and ribosomes.
2) The granular material is nucleoplasm - Contains chromatin which is made of coils of DNA bound to protein. [During cell division, chromatin condenses into chromosomes]
3) Within the nucleus are one or more spherical bodies called a nucleolus (Formation of rRNA)
Mitochondria consist of:
-Two membranes separated by a narrow, fluid-fillef inter-membrane space. (The inner membrane is folded inwards to form cristae)
-An organic matrix, which is a solution containing many compounds, including lipids and proteins
-Small (70S) ribosomes and a small circle of DNA ...which enable mitochondria to make some of their own proteins and self-replicate
Chloroplasts consist of:
-70S ribosomes and circular DNA...which enable them to make some of their own proteins and self replicate
-The STROMA which contains some products for photosynthesis
-Within the STROMA are closed, flattened sacs called THYLAKOIDS. A stack of these is called a GRANUM. Photosynthetic pigments are found in the THYLAKOIDS. [The arrangement produces a large surface area -efficient for trapping light energy]
