Diffusion
is the nest movement of molecules and ions from a region of high concentrations to a region of low concentration down a concentration gradient, as a result of random movement.
Osmosis
Osmosis expiriment
putting potatoe cylinders in different concentrations
the ones in a higher concentration gained mass
Importance of water potential in plants
- a vacuole pushing out on the wall is said to be turgid, the vacuole is exerting turgor pressure
- if the vacuole loses water the cell will lose turgor and become flaccid
Importance of water potential in animals
- animal cells don't have cell walls therefore if there is a very high water potential in the cells they may burst
- when the plasma becomes more concentrated because of dehydration the water will be drawn from the red cells by osmosis. they become plasmolysed.
Percentage change in mass
change in mass/mass at start x100
Active transport
- the movement of particles through a cell membrane from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration using energy from respiration
Importance of active transport
- epithelial cells in the small intestine for absorbing glucose
- same in the kidney tubules for the reabsorption of glucose molecules into the bloodsteam
