The defenders of Tobruk did not surrender. Their determination bravery and humour combined with the aggressive tactics of their commanders game them the name "The rats of Tobruk"
Living conditions harsh due to filthy conditions in trenches sickness etc.
Versing germany held out and won.
It was vital for the Allies defence of Egypt and the Canal to hold the town with its harbour, as this forced the enemy to bring most of their supplies overland from the port of Tripoli across 1500km desert as well as diverting troops from their advance. Tobruk was subject to repeated ground assaults and almost constant shelling and bombing
