Lorenz's geese
Animal study looked at relationships between mother and infant.
Divided goose eggs so that some were with him and others were with the real mother.
Found-the incubator group followed him, the chicks had imprinted Lorenz.
If imprinting doesn't occur during critical period chicks do not attach to a mother figure.
Although chicks attached themselves Lorenz was unable to them things like mating which their mother could.
Harlow's monkeys
Tests idea that a soft object serves a function of mother.
6 monkeys, with 2 wired model mothers.
1 condition-milk bottle, but plain wire.
2 condition-no milk but covered with cloth.
Baby monkeys preferred the soft object
-only went to milk went necessary.
Shows comfort contact more important.
Bowlby-ASC MI
A- adaptive
S- social releasers(unlock innate tendency)
C- critical period(birth to 2 1/2 years)
M- monotrophy (mum is the most important)
I- internal working model, special mental schema for relationships, if you have a good bond with your mother future relationships will be good.
