Ego Psychology
focuses on rational, conscious processes of ego and preserving it. Personality fixed in childhood. Parent child atachment and deprivation. Ego psyc. is based on present (here and now) rather than past. Goal is to maintain and enhance ego's control and management of the stresses of reality. Tx focuses on ego func. and presumes that healthy behavior is under control of ego. Development happens throughout life.
Ego Psyc. examines:
how person in enviornment
reality testing: person's perception of situation
adaptation and coping abilities: identifying and using ego strengths
Ego Psychology addresses 4 main things
- How a client behaves in relation to the situation he or she finds himself or herself in
- Reality testing: a client's perception of the situation
- Coping abilities: ego strengths
- Capacity for relating to others
Goal: maintain and enhance ego's control and management of stress and it's effects
