Alpha-helix
Held together by H bonds between main chain atoms within one turn of each other.
Side chains are arrayed on the exterior of the helix. Some have one side that is hydrophobic and one hydrophilic due to alternating hydrophilic and phobic residues.
Beta-sheet
Held together by H bonds between main chain atoms fro one strand to the next.
Multiple beta strands make up a beta-sheet.
Side chains project above and below the surface of the sheet.
