1) Contracting
-the 4 components of a good contract between a worker and a client are:
1. Client involvement
2. Behavior specificity in goal setting
3. Consequences for compliance
4. Specified time frame
Reasons why contracts fail?
-lack of clarity
-agreements are too hard for the client
-client's lack enough internal and social support to motivates them
-contracts are too confusing
-support is not immediate or intense enough
-promised consequences are not delivered
Case managers contract with colleagues, social service agencies, community organizations, and other people in the community
2) Negotiation
Negotiation involves active listening, restating, reframing, summarizing, partializing, goal setting, and contracting
Steps in negotiation includes:
-know what you want and assess needs of other party: important because you need to be confident
-set boundaries after assessing needs
-making an offer:includes drafting agreement between both parties explaining what they will do or not do to achieve a desired result
-maximizing similarities and minimizing differences
- taking a stand: taking a stance but offering a concession
-polarizing: clearly articulating the differences of both parties and focusing on how much each side has to lose if an agreement is not reached
-the power play: a risky technique in which one side is threatening to pull out of the negotiation if it doesn't go their way
-co-optation: a strategy in which one side tries to win over a negotiating adversary by means other than the negotiation issues
-art of compromise
3) Record Keeping
Problems for workers and administrators involving record keeping includes:
-1.controlling the time it takes to enter client information in records
-2. making client data meaningful and reasonably available to the worker
-3. making pertinent client data available to agency personnel for evaluation
- 4. being able to effectively transfer pertinent client information to community professionals
-5. complying with new H.I.P.P.A guidelines
4) Evaluation of CM Practice
Reasons why clients fail:
1. Case manager's lack of skills
2. Lack of support from significant others, community networks, and other institutions
3. Clients have psychological and biological characteristics that make it hard for them to be successful (i.e. personal history, chronic mental illness, addictions, disability)
-case management effectiveness involves how much professional time and effort it takes for a group to reach their goals.
-effectiveness and efficiency are different
Ways to guage CM effectiveness:
- self-evaluation
-comparing practice to that of your colleagues (risky)
-consider client's support group/ personal history
