spinal cord, grey & white matter
grey is organised in a "H" shape
white surrounds is
grey matter
organised in horns - 3 horns (post, ant, lat)
horns are composed of neurons (nuclei)
the nuclei are divided into 4 groups
somatomotor nuclei (ant horn)
somatosensory nuclei (post horn)
visceromotor and viscerosensory nuclei (lateral horn)
post horn
contains sensory centres
-nucleus proprius (protopathic sensation)
nucleus dorsalis (of clarke) (proprioception)
protopathic sensation
sensation of pain
temp
pressure
proprioception
sensation of muscle tone
lateral horn
visceromotor + viserosensory nuclei (vegetative functions)
intermediomedial nucleus
intermediolateral nucleus
anterior horn
motor centres (motorneurons) - 2 types
alpha motoneurons - impulses to contract muscles
beta motoneurons - for control of muscle tone
white matter
on the outside; around the grey matter
separated into funiculi - 3 (ant, lat, post)
contain nerve pathways of the spinal cord
(asc + desc tracts)
white matter contains tracts - asc pathways
anterolateral funiculus
posterior funiculus
lateral funiculus
