Compare the two maincategories of plastic.
Thetwo main categories of plastics are thermoplastic and thermosetting plastic.
Thermoplasticplastics can be heated and reformed a number of times whereas thermosettingplastics cannot.
Thermosettingplastics tend to be harder than thermoplastics.
*** This is a fundamentalaspect of plastics within design and technology. You will only have workingexperience of thermoplastic materials like acrylic but you must be aware of thethermosetting plastic. The term ‘thermoset’ is an alternative to‘thermosetting’.
Give one example of howeach of the following plastics might be used and state which of the material’scharacteristics makes it particularly appropriate.
(1) Polythene
(2) Nylon
(3) Acrylic
(4) ABS
(5) Melamine formaldehyde
(6) Epoxy Resin
-Polythylene– Squeezy bottles – chemical resistant and flexibleNylon– bearings – low coefficient of friction
-Acrylic– signs – bright colours
-Melamineformaldehyde – work surfaces – hard scratch resistant
-Epoxyresin – adhesive – bonds to unlike materials.
***Clearly there is a range of answers to this question, but always answer withinyour knowledge area. The plastics here and the applications are common in everyday life. Look down the chart of plastics and try to become familiar with atleast one common place application for each material and the appropriatematerial property. Inthis answer it would have been acceptable to use ‘melamine’ rather thanmelamine formaldehyde.
