What are the three types of bonds found in biological molecules?
Covalent, ionic and hydrogen
Describe covalent bonding
Atoms share a pair of electrons between their outer shells completing both of the atoms outer shells, this forms a compound known as a molecule
Describe ionic bonding
Ions with opposite charges attracted one another, the electrostatic attraction is the ionic bond
Describe hydrogen bonding
The electrons within a molecule spend more time at one position causing the region to be more negatively charged, this molecule is a polar molecule. The negative region of one polarised molecule and the positively charged region of another polarised molecule attract.
Name the process in which many monomers join together
Polymerisation
Polymerisation produces a water molecule. What type of reaction is polymerisation?
A condensation reaction
By what type of reaction are polymers broken down by?
Hydrolysis
What is a metabolism?
A metabolism is all of the chemical processes thattake place in living organisms
