Constitution

-It's a plan for government


-It decides what it can and can't do.


-Sets up different branches of government

Rules and Regulations

-GA realized it needed more permanent form of government.


-GA's new constitution was written and introduced the separation of powers.


-Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches shall all be separate from one another.

Articles of Confederation

-Each state had an equal vote, regardless of size or population.


-The United States was a confederation, a partnership of independent, equal states.


-Delegates adopt this in 1777.

Problems with GA's First Constitution

-GA's first constitution gave too much power to the legislative branch.


-The constitution set up a unicameral (one-house) legislature.


-This legislature, The House Of Assemble, had the power to enact laws and appoint officials in the other branches.

Shays Rebellion

-It was quickly put down, but it alarms the country.


-A man named Danial Shays started a rebellion against the state in response

GA signers of Constitution

-William Pierce, William Houston, William Few, and Abraham Baldwin were GA's four delegates.


-Only few and Baldwin remained to sign the Constitution.


-With a partner, discuss why GA would support these ideas.

Bill of Rights

-Added to the ratified Constitution.


-Along with various compromises would keep the national government from becoming too powerful.


-January 2nd, 1788- Georgia became the fourth state to ratify the Constitution.
