What are connective tissues?
connective tissue is compose of cells and extracellular material.
it is vascular, except for catilage NOT found on free surfaces of body extracellular material determinant of characteristics of connective tissue |
What are two main component of the extracellular material?
1. Ground substance (hyaluronic acid, proteoglycans/protein carbohydrates)
2. fibers |
What are the types of fibers in connective tissue
Collegen
Reticular fibers Elastic fibers |
What are Collagen fibers?
thick, rope-like fiber
strong and flexible, but NOT elastic DO NOT branch LOCATION: tendons, ligaments, bones, cartilage |
What are Reticular fibers?
fine, short, narrow collegen fibers
Not as strong as collagen Branches GRAPES on the VINES filling in spaces between tissues and organs |
What are elastic fibers?
Made of elastin protein.
after stretching, it resumes its original shape. |
What are the classes of connective tissue?
1. connective Proper
2. Cartilage 3. Bone 4. Blood |
What are the types of connective proper tissue
Loose Connective tissue
Dense Connective tissue |
What is loose Connective tissue
contains cell types, few fibers, very vascular
Areolar CT Adipose CT Reticular CT |
What are Areolar connective tissue?
Binds the epithelial to the connective tissue
where defense cells fight against infection |
What are Adipose connective tissue?
stores energy/nutrients
protects and reduces heat loss through skin found in the hypodermis |
What is Reticular connective tissue?
like areolar CT
only contains only reticular fibers forms frame work of organs (liver, spleen, lymph nodes, & bone marrow |
What are Dense connective tissues?
contains few cells (mainly fibroblasts) & many fibers (collagen fibers thicker) can resist strong pulling force s
slightly vascular |
What are the types of dense connective tissues
Dense Regular connective tissue
Dense irregular connective tissue Elastic connective tissue |
What is dense regular connective tissue
Fibers are arranged in PARALLEL
collagen and elastin fibers (parallel = tensile strength in direction of pull one direction force LOCATION: dermis of skin, joint capsules, submucosa of Gasteral intestine, fibrous membranes (thick sheets of connective tissues) |
What is Dense irregular connective tissue?
fibers are NOT arranged in PARALLEL
pulling force is in ALL directions |
What is elastic connective tissue?
contains mainly elastic fibers, recoiling
FUNCTION: walls of elastic arteries, trachea, bronchi, true vocal cords |
What is Cartilage?
resists compression (pressing)
contains chondrocytes nonvascular matrix thin collagen fibers |
What are types of cartilage?
Hyaline cartilage
Elastic cartilage fibrocartilage |
What is Hyaline cartilage?
contains collagen fibers (NOT visible)
Chondrocytes in lacuna LOCATION: articular surfaces (top and bottom of bone), trachea, nose |
What is elastic cartilage?
flexible
contains mainly collagen and lots of elastic fibers LOCATION: external ear, epiglottis |
What is fibrocartilage?
Mostly collagen fibers
STRONGEST cartilage Chondrocytes arranged in rows LOCATION: intervertebral discs, discs of knee joint |
What is bone?
hard matrix with calcium salts
supports body, PROTECTS organs, skeletal muscle attachment storage of Ca2+ |
What is Lamellae?
Matrix formed in layers
What are osteoblast?
produce the bone matrix
What are esteocytes?
maintain bone matrix
What are exteoclasts?
break down the bone matrix
What is blood?
cells + platelets(blood clotting) + plasma (liquid part of blood)
matrix is the blood plasma transports respiratory gasses (Oxygen in and CO2 out), nutrients, wastes and other subatances |
What are 2 blood cell types?
Erythrocytes & leukocytes
What are erythrocytes?
Red blood cells
what are Leukocytes
white blood cells
What are the types of Muscle tissue?
striated muscle
cardiac muscle Smooth muscle |
What are striated muscle?
cells elongated, multinucleated, clear striations
What are cardiac muscle?
finer striations, branching cells, intercalated discs
What are smooth muscle?
no striations, spindle-shaped fibers, centrally placed nucleus
LOCATION: in wall of hollow organs vessels |
What are neurons?
highly branched specialized excitatory cells, extensive cytoskeleton, pale staining nucleus
what are neuroglia?
supporting cells that insulate and nurture neurons
