Georgia's Card 1--Intro to Slide 3

Some major composers of the modern era are Claude Debussy, Sergei Prokofiev, George Gershwin, and Igor Stravinsky. These composers were all very different, each of them from a different country. What makes them very popular when it comes to the topic of the 20th century music era, is the fact that they all have very famous music pieces.

Declan's Card 1--Claude Debussy--Slide 3

Claude Debussy is one of the major composers of the modern era. He was born on August 22, 1862 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France. He lived 56 years and "britannica.com" describes him works to be a "seminal force in the music of the 20th century". Debussy commonly worked with impressionism and one of his most famous pieces is "Clair de Lune" which may sound familiar to some people.

Another famous composer of the 20th century is Sergei Prokofiev. This composer was born in Krasne, Ukraine and is known for classical. He loved listening to his mother play Beethoven on the piano ever since he was born on the 23rd of April in 1891. Prokofiev composed his very first classical piece at 5 and four years later had composed an opera. When he had enrolled at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, he was several years younger than his classmates, yet he was still unsatisfied with his classes, and thought them to be boring.


He left the Conservatory and became a composer-pianist.

George Gershwin lived 39 years, born on the 26th of September. He was born in the year 1898 in Brooklyn, New York. Gershwin commonly worked on classics. In his early life, his mentor had said, "This boy is a genius," when writing a letter to his sister about George. After dropping out of school, Gershwin began playing the piano professionally at age 15. Later on in his life, Gershwin played in several nightclubs, and for the purpose of earning extra cash, he worked as a rehearsal pianist for many Broadway singers. Gershwin died in 1937, living a very musical 39 years.

Last but not least, we have Igor Stravinsky. Stravinsky, from Lomonosov, Russia, was born on June 17, 1882.
