Discontinuous variation
traits controlled by a single gene and represented by two or three alleles, and ordinarily the phenotypes are distinct classes e.g. yellow/green pea pods
Continuous variation
Traits with many variations that varies in a smooth fashion between the extremes. Are controlled my more than one gene
Polygenic
controlled by more than one gene (continuous traits)
Multifactorial
a hereditary pattern seen when there is more than one genetic factor involved and, sometimes, environmental factors
EX skin color
Complex Trait
a hereditary pattern seen when there are multiple genes and multiple environmental factors; it is also a continuous (smooth) distribution of phenotypes
Additive Model of polygenic Inheritance
1) traits are qualified by the degree of the characteristic expressed
2) phenotypic exppression varies and is best analyzed in populations
3) traits are controlled by 2+ genes
4) are inherited in a standard Mendelian pattern - with independent assortment
5) the effect of each active allele is small
