What is speaking anxiety?

What is delivery form?
one of the most basic elements of any speaking genre involves the expectations for how the speech is going to be delivered.
What types of delivery forms are there?
Manuscript
Memory
Impromptu
Extemporaneous
What is manuscript?
writing out every word of a speech and delivering it as written.
Pro: allows for careful sculpting of stylistic language or complex arguments that otherwise would be difficult to convey.
Con: provides a “crutch” that speakers rely on too much, which causes them to effectively ignore the audience and deliver the speech as if they are simply reading aloud.
What is memory?
write a manuscript and then rehearse it until one knows it by heart.
Pro: allows for a speaker to walk around a “stage” without being tied to a podium and engage the audience.
Con: if even one part of the speech is forgotten, the speaker runs the risk of their mind going blank at which point there is nothing to help them find their place.
What is impromptu?
to speak without preparation on a subject given to you at the moment.
                            Pro: the most “natural” and spontaneous and thus often the most interesting to hear.
                            Con: provides absolutely no “safety net.”
What is extemporaneous?
a mixture of each of the three previous forms; its essential feature is the “note card.”
Pro:  provides structure but allows for adaptation in such a way that the speaker will be able to connect with the audience on a personal level while still making a formal argument or presentation.
Con: it tends towards a staggered and formulaic delivery. Think award show acceptance speeches.
What is delivery?
the way the speaker physically performs the speech.

represents a coherent and recognized arrangement of elements in a composition or discourse that is appropriate to certain occasions and which creates an audience expectations that constrain a speech’s content, style, and delivery.
