Amino Acid
Organic compound containing an amino group, a carboylic acid group and any of various side groups. Link together peptide bonds to form proteins. The building blocks of proteins.
Protein
Chains of amino acids. Fundamental components of living cells.
Enzyme
A protein (or protein-based molecule) that speeds up a chemical reaction in a living organism.
Acid
Any chemical compound that, when dissolved in water, gives a solution with a hydrogen ion activity greater than in pure water, i.e. a pH less than 7.0. Too much hydrogen.
Base
Any chemical compound that, when dissolved in water, gives a solution with a pH higher than 7.0. Too little hydrogen.
