•Ships lay cable, the end result was a technical success: however the connection only lasted a few days and then it failed
•New cable was laid in 1866 that remained connected
•To many the laying of the Atlantic cable was the first way to connect continent to continent

•1951 the UNIVAC 1 became one of the first commercially available computers
•Both the U.S. Census Bureau and GE owned UNIVACs. One of UNIVAC’s impressive early achievements was predicting the winner of the 1952 presidential election, Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Step 4: An event that created the need to link computers
• 1957- Russians launched Sputnik-1
• Challenged America’s technological superiority and pushed our research forward dramatically
• Military created a system of command and control for retaliation
Step 5: A common electronic language
-1969 the ARPAnet was developed using the concept of packet switching.
-The first computers to connect via telephone lines were those of UCLA and Stanford

• In 1976 however, Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs created a computer circuit board they called the Apple 1 that changed the whole idea of computing. It was from this idea, that they eventually formed the apple computer company and brought computers into the hands of the general public
