• Old face type styles are very good for large amounts of body copy because they are highly readable

• Serifs horizontal and thin
• Radical thick-thin transition in stroke
• Moderns work best when they are set very large. They are not a good choice for body copy. They have a cold and elegant feel.
Modern

• Very slight transition in stroke
• Slab serifs can be used for body copy buy they will appear heavier and darker than old style. Often used I children’s books
Slab Serif

• No transition in stroke
• TV graphics use Sans Serif exclusively because they repoduce well on the screen. In print, they are used in headlines. Have an informal feel.
San Serif

• Looks like handwriting. Use sparingly, never use in all caps. Can be stunning if set large.

• Useful for special effects, do not use for body copy. Make sure it fits the feel of the design.
