|
He was one of two Catholic priests who went to Maryland. He also was the oldest person in the group to come to Maryland at that time. He was 54. He worked at converting the Native Americans to Christianity. He also wrote a book on the history of the colony.

Mathias de Sousa

He was one of two Africans who came to Maryland in that first group. He was an indentured servant and worked for Andrew White. He piloted his own boat and did much trading with Native Americans. When he became a free man (after his indenture) he served on the General Assembly.

He was just ten years old when he arrived at the colony. He was an indentured servant and worked for Thomas Cornwallis until he was eighteen. (His indenture lasted eight years). He eventually became a free man and became a farmer.

Margaret Brent
|
She came to the colony four years after it started (in 1638. She had a large farm and grew tobacco. She also raised cows and hogs. She was a good friend of the governor, and when the governor died, she took care of his property. She went to the General Assembly and tried to convince them to allow women to vote.

Cutting down trees

The colonists did this to create St. Mary's City. Unfortunately, it changed the habitat so much that many of the Native Americans had to move on to another location.

|
This is the muddy, earthy material that was washed into rivers and streams when all the trees were cut down. It killed much of the fish and shellfish in the streams. Normally, the forests would stop the erosion. This material made the rivers and streams too shallow for large boats to sail up them.
