How do you define a "natural number" or a "positive integer"?
The set of integers starting with 1 and increasing: 1,2,3,4...
How do you define a "whole number"?
The set of integers starting with 0 and increasing: 0,1,2,3...
How do define a "Negative Integer"?
The set of integers starting with -1 adn decreasing:
-1,-2,-3...
Define an "even integer".
An integer divisible by 2
Define an "odd integer".
An integer not divisible by 2.
What is a "consecutive integer"?
Integers that differ by 1:
(n, n+1, n+2...)
What is a "prime number"?
A Positive integer greater than 1 that are divisible by only 1 and themselves: 2,3,5,7,11...
What is a "composite" number?
An integer, other than 0, 1, or -1, which are not prime.
What is a "real number"?
A real number is any number that can be represented on a number line.
Absolute value is represented by what?
Two vertical lines around the number represents absolute value.
What does absolute value mean?
Absolute value is the distance the number is from 0 without regard to the direction. Example: the absolute value of -4 is just 4.
What is the order of operations?
P-Parentheses
M-Multiplication
D-Division
A-Addition
S-Subtraction
What is a "mixed number"?
A mixed number is the sum of a whole number and a fraction:
4 1/2
What is an "improper fraction"?
An improper fraction is a fraction that has a greater numerator than denominator: 17/3
How do you change a mixed number to an improper fraction?
You multiply the whole number by the denominator of the fraction and add the numerator. The remainder becomes the numerator of the fractional part of the mixed number, and the denominator remains the same.
How do you change an improper fraction to a mixed number?
You divide the numerator by the denominator. The remainder becomes the numerator of the fractional part of the mixed number, adn the denominator remains the same: 35/4= 35 divided by 4= 8 3/4
How do you find the sum of fractions that have a common denominator?
Add the numerators, put that sum over the common denominator.
How do you find the sum of two fractions that have different denominators?
Find the lowest common denominator (LCD). Multiply the numerator and denominator by the number necessary to make the LCD. Add numerators and put over the new common denominator.
How do you find the product of two or more fractions?
You multiply the numerators and denominators straight across.
How do you find the quotient of two fractions?
Flip over the divisor and multiply straight across.
What is a "complex fraction"?
A complex fraction is a fraction whose numerator and/or denominator is made up of fractions.
