Potsdam Conference

The Big Three meet to arrange the ending of WWII. The focus shifts to Japan's surrender.

Iron Curtain Speech

The Iron Curtain was a metaphorical barrier. This speech was given by Winston Churchill.

Civil War in China

Mao Zedong wants to spread communism, but Japan is in China. There ensues a civil war.

Truman Doctrine

Communism was spreading quickly. Since Turkey and Greece were getting influenced by communism very quickly, the US essentially bribed them to not become communist.

Marshall Plan

The Marshall Plan aids Western Europe in 1945-1947. It stops communism and aids foreign trade.

Berlin Blockade

The Allies attack the Soviet Union because they were trying to limit the power of the Allies.

Berlin Airlift

Berlin was blockaded by Germany, but the US and the UK wanted to give supplies to them. The blockade was lifted.

Domino Theory

If the French Indochina fell, it would make everyone else fall too.

Containment

The US prevented communism from spreading by invading other countries. This cost a lot of money.

Korean War

Communist NK invades the democratic SK. China joined and pushed SK back. The US controls communism in Asia but pulls back in other places.

NATO

NATO is an agreement which strengthened the western Ally response to an invasion of Europe.

Warsaw Pact

The USSR wanted to sign this. However, Germany was wishy-washy and left.

Berlin Wall

Communist East Germany wanted to have a secure border with West Germany. However, when East Germany let people leave, people took to the wall with hammers and picks.

Cuban Missile Crisis

The USSR wanted to set up missiles in Cuba. However, the US was like "NO" and set up a blockade. It ended with a compromise with the US leaving Turkey and the USSR leaving Cuba.

Vietnam War

North V. invades South. America goes to help but fails after too many losses. Then, Vietnam is communist!

Solidarity Movement

People were under martial law and did not like their leader. They revolted but were stopped by Polish authorities.

Perestroika

Leader of the USSR during 1980's. Policy of openness. Capitalism! No communism!

Glasnost

Like Perestroika but DEMOCRACY!
