Main limitations with coiled tubing
low flowrate
cannot rotate
buckling
main functionality of tractor
pull string into horizontal section of well
rotate tools/ cutters etc
typical operations with coiled tubing
removing wax, hydrates etc
perforating
fracturing
sand removal
zonal isolation
run completion
logging
fishing
setting plug presizely
drilling
cutting tubing
place gravel pack
what is abrasive jetting
It is an operation similar to sandblasting, use water at high velocity with small nozles in the coil tubing tool to cut casings etc
how can data be sent from tool to other sites
by electric wire from tool to platform
by optical cable from tool to platform
by saving data in the tool and retrieving it when tool returns to platform
Can use satellite to send information, from platform to platform or from platform to onshore site
what is the tornado concept in coiled tubing?
It is when coiled tubing is used for sand removal, the nozzles mounted on the end of a rotating component. the result is that the nozzles makes a swirling effect and tornadoes the sand upwards.
How can we perforate using coiled tubing?
Perforation gun is mounted in the end of the tubing
the guns are lowered to desired depth and trigged by an electrical signal or pressure.
After the explosion the guns can ether be dropped or retrieved to surface.
(can also use abrasive peroration technique)
How is coiled tubing used for underballanced drilling?
underballanced drilling are good for hole cleaning
since the coiled tubing cannot rotate, there is a need for a downhole rotary motor at the bottom of the string. There is also a need for a separator to seaparate the drilling fluid from the produced fluid.
how does a downhole motor work?
The motor rotates when fluid passes
What is a RSM
It is a rib steerable motor
it is steered using ribs
What are the potential growth for coil tubing?
Ct drilling
Fracturing
flowline/prodction line scale removal
deeper wells
