What are the ways of improving memory?

1. Chunking

2. Narrative Chaining

3. Method of Loci

4. Acronym

5. Acrostic

6. Key word method

There are 6, but you only need a few examples.
What is the Encoding?

Transformation of sensory information which allows it to be held in memory.

*Acoustic, semantic or visual

How information is put into memory?
What is Storage?

How long information can be kept in the memory.

*Known as DURATION

Keeping information in memory.
What is Retrieval?

The process of locating and extracting the information from memory.

*Recalling and remembering

The two R's of memory.
Explain the Multi-store Memory Model? (draw a diagram to help)

Information comes from the 5 senses, enters SM (sensory memory), pay attention to info will be moved to STM, maintenance rehearsal keeps in STM, elaborate rehearsal moves to LTM, any info that is not rehearsed is lost, info can be retrieved from LTM and STM. This is LINEAR, has UNITARY stores and they are DISCRETE.
Remember the processes of the stores (SM, STM, LTM).
What is the research into STM?

CAPACITY: Jacobs -> Digit span technique or letters, ps had to immediately recall what they had heard (between 5-9 items which is 7+/-2).

Numbers recalled better than letters.

STM increased with age - 6.6 average for 8 yrs, 8.6 for 19 yrs.

(Miller's support 'magic number 7 +/- 2')

DURATION: Peterson and Peterson ->

Capacity, duration and encoding
