cognitive reconstructuring
aims to train a person to think differently and so to change their behaviour for the better
irrational thinking
e.g. anorexic people are not able to see themselves as too thin, even when they are extremely underweight
What's the difference between cognitive behavioural therapies and behavioural therapies?
CBT focus on how a person thinks rather than acting directly on its behaviour
What are the two types of CBT?
Rational Emotive Therapy (Ellis 1950s)
Stress Inoculation Therapy (Meichenbaum 1970s)
What is RET?
a method to help the client recognise and discuss unrealistic thoughts and to teach them how to replace them with more realistic ones
-> implies very tough and challenging conversations between client and therapist
On which believe is SIT based?
the believe that individuals tend to think of stressful situations in a catastrophising way
How does SIT work?
it works like biological immunisations with small 'doses' of the stressor to make the patient resistant to it
What is the process of SIT?
3 phases:
- discussion of patient's problems and the way t deals with stressors
- teaching the patient skills to replace self-defeating statements with positive statements and e.g. relaxation excercises
- practicing these skills e.g. in role plays until the patient is able to deal with real-life-stressors
