Conditioning
increased flexibility allows a less chance of injury
due to more joint mobility Warm-up Cool down - blood pooling - cramps |
Practice Progression
athletes come into the season at different levels of
fitness, therefore practice should progress Preseason - first 3-4 weeks of season has the highest incidence of injury, and this is attributed to conditioning |
Injury Prevention
Therefore, there needs to be some type of
compromise between resources and demands 2 a day practices: realize the athlete will be depleted nutritionally and physically Most athletes go into 1st game in worse condition than when they started, give plenty of recovery time to prevent injury and from reoccurrence. |
Mental State
paying attention
mental preparation is very important to injury prevention make sure their minds are on what they are doing Slow reaction times increase the risks for injury Drugs and alcohol |
Nutrition
Food replacement is of the upmost importance
water and electrolytes must constantly be replaced malnutritious athletes do not have proper control of their muscles |
Nutrition
Carbs 60-80% of diet
Stay away from simple carbs such as sugars, candy bars, orange slices, etc. Multipurpose vitamins are good to introduce to athletes stress fractures and muscle strains occur from a lack of certain vitamins |
Nutrition
Recognize athletes with an eating disorder
Anorexia Bulimia refer them to an expert, do not try to deal with this yourself |
