Coach's Role

Liability
Liability is the state of being legally responsible for the
harm one causes another person.
– This assumes that the coach or athletic trainer would act
accordingly to the standards of care of any individual
with similar educational background or training.
Negligence
Negligence is the failure to use ordinary or reasonable
care
– did you fail to do something you were supposed to do to prevent
harm
– did you do something you should not have done that caused harm
– standard is set by the profession
Tort
Torts are legal wrongs committed against another
person.
– Something intentional to harm another
– Examples in Athletics:
• football (hitting someone with intent to harm)
• hockey (striking with the stick to the head)
• actions go beyond the expectations of the sport

 athletes come into the season at different levels of
fitness, therefore practice should progress
 Preseason - first 3-4 weeks of season has the
highest incidence of injury, and this is attributed to
conditioning

Therefore, there needs to be some type of
compromise between resources and demands
 2 a day practices: realize the athlete will be
depleted nutritionally and physically
 Most athletes go into 1st game in worse condition
than when they started, give plenty of recovery time
to prevent injury and from reoccurrence.

 Food replacement is of the upmost importance
 water and electrolytes must constantly be replaced

 Stay away from simple carbs such as sugars, candy
bars, orange slices, etc.
 Multipurpose vitamins are good to introduce to
athletes
 stress fractures and muscle strains occur from a
lack of certain vitamins
