Explain why we implement primary prevention
(1) minimize the emergence of new cases, from something undesirable happening in the future
(2) doing something now that will improve the occurrence of something positive in the future
(3) bolsters strength of individuals while fostering more health contexts (family, school, health, work)
What does it mean when we say that prevention requires intentionality rather than responsivity?
Primary prevention is not driven by an urgent demand for assistance (responding). rather it requires the assessment of need and planning, implementation, evaluation and revision process many times over
What are the two major methods of prevention?
(1) strengthening the person
increase their skills, give sense of agency, instill healthy habits, constructive attitude
(2) inducing change in human systems
increase environmental resources and supports, decrease stressors and factors that increase the likelihood of psychological dysfunction
