What are the most common diagnosis found in the ED?
chest pain, abdominal pain, headache, fever
What are some of the special populations that you will come across in the ED?
frequent flyers: come in often, must take seriously every time
Drug seekers: might have a list of these people in ED
Safety net: use ED as primary
Compliance: non compliant pt. (ex: diabetics)
Homeless: use as primary care
Who are the interdisciplinary team members?
prehospital care staff (police, EMT, paramedics)
physicians
professional staff (xray, labs, etc)
support staff (clerks, police, etc)
Explain what triage is
triage is the "gatekeeper" of the ED. They assess each pt and prioritize their care as EMERGENT, URGENT OR NON-URGENT
Explain how triage places each patient in either emergent, urgent or non-urgent
emergent: life or limb situation (ex: hemmorhage)
urgent: is injured but not life or death (ex: fracture)

non-urgent: walking wounded, need care but won't die within 24 hours if untreated immediately
What do they mean by primary survey?
these are the inital assessment interventions

Airway/spine (need to know what is going on with the spine in order to know how to do your airway)
breathing, circulation, neurological assessment (pupils, sensations, bilat. movements), skin (look at body, not just condition of clothing)
What are secondary survey?
xray, sonograms, labs, etc
What do they mean by the "golden hour"?
that there is a window of opportunity. Early aggressive care is important (establishing IV access, give fluids, etc. while in field and not waiting until getting to ED)
What are the core competencies that should be apparent in the ED staff?
assessment, priority setting, knowledge base (protocols), technical skills (know equipment, etc), communication, certification
Who is the main communication officer during a mass casualty?
either the senior administrative officer or the administrator on call (weekends/evenings)
Explain the mitigation phase of a disaster. Give an example
preventing the disaster, minimize vulnerability to effects of an event
Ex: assess a group of elderly citizens for their awareness about heat strokes before summertime, educate them
Explain the preparedness phase of a disaster. Give an example
assure capacity to respond to a disaster
Ex: assess population for special needs during a disaster, have plans in place to care for these pts., train staff
Explain the response phase of a disaster. Give an example
provide support to persons/communities affected by a disaster.
Ex: serve as a response team, triage pts. during a disaster
Explain the recovery phase of a disaster. Give an example
restore systems to functional level
Ex: serve on team to assess community assets/potential for recovery from a disaster, help plan long-term recovery priorities
