What is schizophrenia?
A psychotic disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels and behaves. There are 3 types of schizophrenias- paranoid, disorganised and catatonic. There are also positive and negative symptoms that affect the individual. E.g. hallucinations and social withdrawal.

Biochemical Factor - Dopamine Hypothesis

-Research suggest presence of excess dopamine receptors at synapse in brain leads to schizophrenia


- as brain is "hypersensitive" - hallucinations may occur as brain is hyper-stimulated


-effect of anti-psychotic drugs to treat schizophrenia = chlorpromazine blocks dopamine receptors, reducing sensitivity


- logic = reducing sensitivity to dopamine means excess number is the cause
