Closed Bed
An unoccupied bed (not being used by a client) with the top covers drawn back to the top of the bed and under the pillow
Cross-Contamination
The transfer of microorganisms from one surface to another
Dangle
To have the client sit at the side of the bed with the feet in a dependent position
Draw sheet
Sheets made of fabric, plastic, or rubber that are pleaded across the shoulder to knee area of the bed and tucked in on the sides
Fanfold
To fold or gather in an accordion fashion
Log Roll
A technique used to turn a client whose body must at all times be kept in straight alignment
Miter
A method of folding the bed linen at the corners to secure them in place while the bed is occupied
Postural hypotension or Orthostatic hypotension
A sudden drop in the blood pressure that is caused by a change in position from lying to sitting or standing; may cause dizziness,fainting, or falling
Occupied bed
The client remains in bed while it is being made
Open Bed
A bed not presently being used by its occupant, with the top covers folded back
Surgical bed
A bed with the top covers fan folded to one side or to the end of the bed; may be called anesthetic, recovery or postoperative bed
Toe Pleat
A fold made in the top of the bed linen to provide additional space for the client’s toes and feet; may be vertical or horizontal
Transfer (walking) belt
A belt with a handle that is placed around the client’s abdomen and allows the nurse to control movement of the client during transfer
Trochanter roll
A rolled towel support placed against the hips to prevent external rotation of the legs
Unoccupied bed
A bed not currently being used by a client
Complete bath
The nurse washes the entire body of a dependent client in bed
Eccrine glands
Sweat glands distributed over the entire skin surface. Important in regulating body heat.
Hirsutism
Condition characterized by the excessive growth of hair in unusual places, especially women
Partial bath
The face, hands axillae, perineal area and back are washed. Omitted are the arm, chest, abdomen, legs and feet. The nurse provides this care for dependent clients and assists self care clients confined to bed by washing their backs. Some of the ambulatory clients prefer to take a partial bath at the sink
Perineum
The external region between the vulva and anus in females or between the scrotum and the anus in males
Sebum
The oily, lubricating secretion of glands in the skin called sebaceous glands
Smegma
Secretion of the sebaceous glands, especially the thick, cheesy, ill-smelling secretion found under the labia minora and under the male prepuce
Towel bath
The towel bath is an in bed bath that uses a quick drying solution containing a disinfectant, a cleansing agent, and a softening agent mixed with water. The solution dries in a few seconds, avoiding the need to dry the client and thereby speeding the bathing process.
