A new Windows feature that allows an administrator to resotre server configuration settings in the event that a system cannot be repaired using other methods such as safe mode or last known good configuration.
Automated System Recovery
A system resource or device that limits a system's performance. Ideally the user should be the bottleneck on a system, not any hardware or software component.
Bottleneck
Combines shared resources from various locations throughout a network into a single hierarchical system.
Distributed File System
An option in Windows that aloows you to resore a previously used driver after a driver has been upgraded. this option provides an easy mechanism for resotring a driver if the upgraded driver does not work properly.
Driver rollback
A system utility that displays one of three event logs: System, Security and Application, wherein logged or audited event appear. This is often the first stop when monitoring a system's performance or seeking evidence of problems, because it is where all unusual or extradinary system activities and events are recorded.
Event Viewer
A technology that uses a virtual circuit based switching protocol to connect devices on a WAN. It is commonly implemented witht a permanent virtual circuit.
Frame Relay
A printer that uses a physical port and that has not been shared. If a printer is defined like this, thee only users who can use the printer are the local users of the computer that it is attached to.
Local Printer
A port that connects a device directly to the network. LOgical ports are used with printers by installing a network card in the printer.
Logical Port
A print device attached directly to the network medium, usually by means of a built in NIC, but sometimes by means of a parallel attached network printer connection.
Network Printer
Disk space, in the form of a file (pagefiles.sys), for use when memory requirements exceed the available RAM.
Page File
A tool included with Windows Server 2003 that enables you to create coutner logs, trace logs, and configure alerts.
Performance Logs and Alerts
In everyday language, a piece of equipment that provides output services-in other words a printer. In MS terminology, a printer is a logical service that accepts print jobs and delivers them tot he physical device for output when that device is ready.
Print Device
A collection of Windows XP DLLs used to acquire, process, catalog, and dispense print jobs to print devices. It acts like a holding tank; it manages an area on the printer server hard disk where pending print jobs are stored until they've been output
Print Spooler
The software interface between the physical printer (print device)and the operating system.
Printer
A collection of two or more identically configured print devices to which one or more Windows XP printers direct their print jobs.
Printer Pool
A command line interface that provides administrative tools useful for recovering a system that is not booting correctly. It allows a user to view disk volumes, format drives, read and write data and perform toher administrative tasks. Very useful for recovering and repair a damaged operating system.
Recovery Console
A service that allows network connections to be established over a modem connection, an ISDN connection, or a null modem cable.
Remote Access Service
A mechanism for requesting help for x86-based computers through windows messenger and email or by sending a file requesting help. To use this, the computer requesting help and the computer providing help must be using Windows XP professional and must have some sort of interconnectivity.
Remote Assistance
An advanced boot option that allows a Windows Server 2003 system to be booted with minimal services or drivers loaded, typically used for troubleshooting or diagnostic purposes
Safe Mode
A page used at the beginning of each document to identify the user who submitted the print job. When users share a printer, this can be useful for distributing the print jobs.
Separator Page
Records information and alerts about Windows XP professional internal processes.
System Log
A utility in Windows ME that enables you to return your PC to recent working configurations when something goes wrong.
System Restore
A tool used to view the processes and applications currently running on a system. Also provides basic resource usage statistics.
Task Manager
A windows utitlity used to schedule tasks to occur at specific intervals.
Task Scheduler
The replacement application in XP SP2 for Internet Connection Firewall. It is enabled by default and does not allow unsolicited traffic to pass through the filter.
Windows Firewall
