3. Clear damp-heat in the lower jiao: damp-heat dysentery-like disorder or painful urinary disfunction.

C&C:
Do not use in cases of diarrhea resulting from cold in the spleen and stomach. Also contraindicated in skin conditions with clear exudate and Yin Ulcers.

Actions & Indications:
1. Clears heat toxins and disipates nodules: hot sores, neck lumps, & carbuncles.

2. Clears wind-heat: for wind-heat:
fever, slight chills, sore throat, & headache

C&C:
Do not use in Yin type abscesses or carbuncles that have already ulcerated. Also contraindicated in cases of diarrhea resulting from spleen and stomach deficiency. Also Cold (Yin) Ulcers.

Dosage: 6-15g.
Lian Qiao

Properties:
Bitter, Very Cold

Mnemonic:

Actions & Indications:

1.Cools the blood and reduces blotches.

2. Clear heat and relieves toxicity: for any type of warm febrile disease, especially for epidemic and contagious diseases. This herb clears toxins in any part of the body, with an affinity for treating the lungs and the throat.

C&C:
Caution in cases of cold from deficiency of the spleen and stomach.

Dosage: 9-30g.
Da Qing Ye

Bitter, Cold

Actions & Indications:
1. Drain heat, relieve fire toxicity, cool the blood, and benefits the throat: for warm febrile diseases, warm epidemic disorders, mumps, and painful, swollen throat conditions. Also used for damp-heat jaundice.

Weak St or Cold Sp/St.

2. Removes abscesses and dissipates nodules: for abcesses & sores especially if they are firm and hard. Breast and intestinal abcesses. Use internally and topically

3. Promotes lactation: treats insufficient milk secretion due to heat.

- Relieves hypertension: for liver heat and wind-fire causing red eyes.

Ye Ju Hua

Actions & Indications:
- Clears heat and reduces toxins: for lung heat cough and cough with blood.
- Cools and invigorates the blood: for burns, toxic sores, trauma, sprains, and pain caused by blood stagnation.

C&C: Do not use for yin type boils.

Dosage: 3-9g
Zi Bei Tian Kui
Channels: LI, LIV, ST

Properties: Spicy, Bitter, Slightly Cold

Actions:
- Clears heat, removes toxins, and reduces inflammation: for internal toxins from fire causing intestinal abscesses or acute appendicitis. Also eliminates pus and toxins on the skin causing carbuncles, sores, and swellings. Used both internally and topically.
- Eliminates pain due to blood stasis: for blood stagnation caused by heat in the abdomen or chest. Also for post partum and post operative pain, dysmenorrhea and endometriosis.

C&C: Overdosage may cause nausea or dizziness. Do not use in cases of spleen and stomach deficiency.

Bai Jiang Cao

Properties: Spicy, Cool

Actions:
- Eliminates heat and toxins: reduces lung abscess, infections, cough with thick yellowish-green sputum, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
- Detoxifies and expels pus: used both internally and topically for purulent sores.
- Drains dampness: for damp-heat in the large intestine, colitis, or urinary tract infection.

C&C: Do not use in cases of cold from deficiency, or for yin type furuncles.

Dosage: 15-60g.
Yu Xing Cao
"Fishy Smelling Herb"

Properties: Sweet, Cold

Actions:
- Promotes urination and clears heat: for painful urination with blood or stones from damp-heat.
- Neutralizes fire toxins: for mumps or swollen throat.

C&C: None listed.

Dosage: 15-60g.
Hai Jin Sha (aka Jin Sha Teng)
"Sea Gold Sand"

Actions & Indications:
* Clears heat and relieves fire toxicity:
for heat and fire in the lungs and throat
manifesting as asthma or abscesses.
Also for urinary tract infections and toxic skin disorders.

Hot painful urinary dysfunction;
eczema from damp-heat (applied as ointment).

Contraindications:

* Recently used for cancer patients (stomach, esophagal, & colon)

Spleen or Stomach deficiency or where there is nausea or vomiting. Use with caution during pregnancy or with children. Do not take long term or in large doses - can injure stomach, intestines, liver, and kidneys.

Ya Dan Zi

This herb should not be taken with tea.

used in treating amenorrhea or dysmenorrhea.
