List the six classifications of skill
Environment/decision making, continuity, pacing, muscular involvement, coherence/organisation and difficulty
What skills go with the environment/decision-making continuum?
Open and Closed skills
What skills go with the continuity continuum?
Discrete skills, serial skills and continuous skills
What skills go with the pacing continuum?
Self-paced skills and externally paced skills
What skills go with the muscular involvement continuum? (think about it)
Gross skills and fine skills
What skills go with the coherence/organisation continuum?
Coherent/highly organised skills and incoherent/less organised skills
What skills go with the difficulty continuum?
Complex skills and simple skills
What is an open skill?
Skills that are affected by the sports environment, may require the performer to adapt, are mostly externally paced, require decisions to be made, e.g. a football pass
What is a closed skill?
Skills that are unaffected by the sports environment, are habitual, involve a set movement, need less decision-making, tend to be self-paced, e.g. a basketball free throw
What is a discrete skill?
Skills that have a clear beginning and end, are repeatable but the performer must stop and start again, are single, specific skills, e.g. a tennis serve
What is a serial skill?
They are new skills formed by the integration of several discrete elements and have elements in a fixed order, e.g. a gymnastic sequence where many separate moves are combined to make a routine.
What is a continuous skill?
They have no obvious beginning and end and are timed by the performer and also involve repetition of the same movement. e.g. Jogging along a track to keep fit
What is a self-paced skill?
A skill in which the performer controls the rate of execution and involves being pro-active/making a decision before you do the skill e.g. taking a penalty in football, blast or place?
What is an externally-paced skill?
Skills which the rate of execution is outside of the performer's control and requires a reaction time e.g. a windsurfer reaction to the speed of the wind
What is a gross skill?
A skill that is well rank.

Or

Ones that involve large muscle group movements
What is a fine sill?
A skill that involves small muscle group movements
What is a coherent/highly organised skill?
A skill which is not easily broken down and have rapid ballistic movements when the links between each sub-routine, or part, are very fast. E.g. a golf swing
What is an incoherent/less organised skill?
Skills which are easily broken down into their parts or sub routines e.g. a swimming stroke
What is a complex skill?
A skill that involves a lot of decision making and requires much processing of information and might include links between each part of the skill, can be serial e.g. a passing sequence in netball
What is a simple skill?
One that has few decisions and requires little processing of information and can be discrete. E.g. a forward roll in gymnastics
