Several secret routes enslaved people used to escape to the North and Canada.

People who wanted to outlaw slavery across the US.

Describe the Elite Class:

Upper class, owned large plantations, owned many slaves.

Describe the middle class:

Usually lived in cities, may have owned a few slaves, jobs included merchants, shopkeepers, artisans and doctors.

Describe the lower class:

Didn't go to school and worked with their parents.

Describe Independent Farmers:

Owned a small amount of land and worked it themselves.

Describe enslaved African Americans:

They were property owned by a master. They worked in fields, worked as carpenters and household workers. Children were uneducated and worked with their parents.
