What is a super majority?

The amount of people it takes to stop a filibuster.

What are political parties? Their main functions?

A political party is a group of people who seek governmental control. They: nominate, inform supporters, are bonding agents, govern, and they are watchdogs (for the other party in the house).

How do political parties and special interest groups differ?

Political parties seek control in the government and have broad platforms, whereas special interest groups want the representative that will vote their way, to promote their interest.

What are the four reasons for a two party system?

Ratifying constitution created the first two parties, federalists and antifederalists (historical), most Americans accept a two party system because that is how it has always been (traditional), Americans have a broad census, so two parties work for all (ideological census), and most votes are from "winner takes all" elections, thus two parties is easier to work with in the electoral system (electoral system).

What are the four types of minority parties?

1. Ideological Parties- set on particular beliefs.


2. Single Issue Parties- only one public policy matter.


3. Economic Protest Parties- rooted in times of economic discontent.


4. Splinter Parties- parties that split off from other parties.

1. No longer have to have religious qualifications.

Hard money goes straight to the candidate, whereas soft money goes to the entire party.

What is public opinion?

Those attitudes held by a significant number of matters of government and politics.

What are the different forms of mass media?

Television, Print, Radio, and Magazines.

What are the goods and bads about interest groups?

Good: they get the public more involved in politics.


Bad: they may misrepresent or do not represent the group they claim.

1. Business groups (NAM)

3. Agricultural groups (the National Grange)


4. Professional groups (AMA)
