What are 4 characteristics of a state?

A body of people, living in a defined territory, organized politically, with the power to make and enforce law without the consent of any higher authority.

Sovereign

A sovereign has supreme and absolute power within its own territory.

The force theory

Would hold that one person or group claimed control over and area and forced all within it to submit to that persons or groups rule.

The evolutionary theory

They hold that the primitive family, of which one person was the head or, "government", was the first stage in political development.

The divine right theory

Held that the state was created by God and that God had given those of royal birth a "divine right" to rule.

The social contract theory

Was the most significant of the theory of the organ of the state is that of the "social contract".

Unitary government

A government in which all powers held by government belong to a single agency.

British government is unitary

Federal government

One in which the powers of government are divided between a central government and several local governments.

Australia, Canada, Mexico have federal forms of government.

An alliance of independent states

The United States under the articles of confederation (1781-89)
