Apportionment- The act of apportioning,the determination of the number of members of the U.S. House of Representatives

Deficit- The amount by which a sum of money falls short of the required amount.

Writ of habeas corpus- is a court order to a person or agency holding someone in custody to deliver the imprisoned individual to the court issuing the order.

Gerrymandering- Apportioning legislative districts in a way calculated to give an advantage to a political party, by concentrating its members or separating those of another party from one another.

Filibusters are usually given to prevent a vote on a bill.

Filibuster-Filibusters are defined as actions, such as long speeches, that stop a legislative assembly from progressing.

We need to come to cloture, and take up the votes.

Cloture- a parliamentary procedure by which debate is ended and an immediate vote is taken on the matter under discussion. Also called closure.

Members stayed to participate in the legal quorum.

Quorum- minimum number of people needed at a meeting to conduct business

The president is only allowed to pocket veto.

Pocket Veto-A pocket veto occurs when congress is not in session

We must obey the executive order..

Executive order-an order or regulation issued by the President or an agency of the executive branch, having the force of law.

Pardon-an official document freeing someone from additional punishment for a crime committed.

Commute to work every day is very exhausting.

Bipartisan-supported by two political parties that are normally in opposition

Income tax is my favorite time.

Progressive Tax-A progressive tax is a tax in which the tax rate increases as the taxable amount increases

Regressive taxes mostly include sales tax, user fees, and property taxes.

Regressive Tax-describes a distribution effect on income or expenditure, referring to the way the rate progresses from high to low,

Governments use revenues from payroll taxes to fund programs such as Social Security, health care, unemployment compensation and workers compensation.

Payroll Tax-are taxes imposed on employers or employees, and are usually calculated as a percentage of the salaries that employers pay their staff.

The federal debt proved that spending less than one earns is a primary principle to be adhered to.

Federal Debt- amount of money which a government's expenditures exceed its tax revenues

Mandatory spending is spending mandated by law.

Mandatory Spending- spending on certain programs that are required by existing law. Refers to budget authority and ensuing outlays provided in laws other than appropriations.

Discretionary isn't something I like.

Discretionary Spending- government spending implemented through an appropriations bill.

There is so much propaganda in our society.

Propaganda-Information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view

People can be so biased sometimes.

Bias- prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way consider to be unfair

objectivity is part of our rights.

Objectivity- the quality of being objective, lack of bias, open mindedness, fairness, dispassion

The exit poll is not something I've experienced.

Exit Poll- a poll taken of a small percentage of voters as they leave the polls, used to forecast the outcome of an election or determine the reasons for voting decisions

special Interest groups think they should be put before everyone else.

Special Interest group- a body of persons, corporation, or industry that seeks or recieves benefits or privileged treatment, especially through legislation

Political action committee pretty much do all the candidates work while in the running.

Political Action Committee-organization established by a corporation or other special interest to raise money form individuals for a political campaign or other political cause

We can't get the government to reform without grass roots support.

Grass roots- common or ordinary people, contrasted with leadership or elite of a political party, social organization, rank and file, rule, part, basic or primary concept

Thus far, Walmart has tried to overcome such resistance with advertising, lobbying, the lure of jobs, and occasional threats.

Lobbying-people who work or conducr a campaign to influence members of a legislature to vote according to the group's special interest

The political spectrum is something that must be done with as soon as possible, because it causes incredible amounts of conflicts over differences.

Political spectrum- a system classifying different political positions upon one or more geometric axes that symbolize independent political dimensions

The two- party system in Massachusetts isn't working very well.

Two- party system- a politcal system consisting chiefly of two major parties, more or less equal in strength

You may want to bring in a third party to the negotiations.

Third Party- any party to an incident, case,quarrel. Incidetally involved

Most advocates of hard money are simply making a mistake and not thinking about other people.

Hard Money- money given directly to a candidate in an election to assist his or her campaign

I never knew there was a such thing as soft money.

Soft Money- money contributed to a politcal candidate or party that is not subject to federal regulations

The Republican caucus in the House is 89 percent white men.

Caucus- a meeting of party leaders to select candidates, elect convention delegates, etc

Candidates are nominated by a direct primary in your state.

Direct primary- a primary in which members of a party nominate its candidates by direct vote

closed primary is made to encourage party unity and prevent members of other parties from voting to nominate candidates.

Closed Primary- a primary in which only members from a particular party may vote



Mississippi has long operated as a state that functionally had an open primary.

Open Primary- A direct primary election in which voters need not tot meet a test of party membership

A plurality should not be asserted without necessity.
