System Unit
a case that contains electronic components of the computer used to process data
Motherboard
(system board) the main circuit board of the system unit
chip
a small piece of semiconducting material, usually silicon, on which integrated circuits are attached.
CPU
(Central Processing Unit) (Processor) interprets and carries out the basic instructions that operate a computer.
Multi-core processor
a chip with two or more separate processor cores.
ALU
(Arithmetic Logic Unit) the component of the processor that performs arithmetic, comparison, and other operations.
System clock
a small quartz crystal circuit that controls the timing of all computer operations.
clock speed
the pace of the system clock (measured by number of ticks per second)
four steps in the Machine Cycle
(a student enters a math problem into the memory of the computer)
1. The control unit fetches the math problem's instructions and data from memory
2. The control unit decodes the math problem's instructions and sends the instructions and data to the ALU.
3. The ALU performs calculations on the data.
4. The results of the math problem are stored in memory.
(The results in memory appear on the screen of the monitor)
binary system
a number system that has just two unique digits, 0 and 1, called bits
bit (binary digit)
the smallest unit of data that computers can process
byte
provides enough different combinations of 0s and 1s to represent 256 individual characters
memory
consists of electronic components that store instructions waiting to be executed by the processor, data needed by the instructions, and the results of processing the data
volatile memory
lost when the computer is turned off
nonvolatile memory
doesn't loose its contents when the computer is turned off
RAM memory
(Random Access Memory) consists of memory chips that can be read from and written to by the processor and other devices
ROM memory
(Read Only Memory) refers to the memory chips storing permanent data and instructions
memory module
a small circuit board where the RAM chips reside
memory slot
hold memory modules
Cache
helps speed the processor of a computer because it stores frequently used instructions and data
L1 Cache
built directly into the processor chip (very small capacity)
L2 Cache
slightly slower that L1 cache, but much larger capacity
flash memory
a type of nonvolatile memory that can be erased electronically and rewritten
CMOS
provides high speeds and consumes little power
ccess time
the amount of time it takes the processor to read data, instructions, and information from memory
nanosecond
one billionth of a second
expansion slot
a socket on the motherboard that can hold an adapter card
adapter card
(expansion card) a circuit board that enhances functions of a component of the system and/or provides connections to peripherals
flash memory
a type of nonvolatile memory that can be erased electronically and rewritten
video card
(graphics card) converts computer output into a video signal that travels through a cable to the monitor, which displays an image on the screen
sound card
enhances the sound-generating capabilities of a personal computer by allowing sound to be input through a microphone and output through external speakers or headphones
USB hub
a device that plugs in a USB port on the system unit and contains multiple USB ports in which you can plug cables from USB devices
memory card
a removable flash memory device, usually no bigger than 1.5" in height or width, that you insert and remove from a slot in a personal computer, game console, mobile device, or a card reader
port
the point at which a peripheral attaches to or communicates with a system unit so that the peripheral can send data to or receive information from the computer
USB port
(Universal Serial Bus port)can connect up to 127 different peripheral together with a singel connector
FireWire Pirt
similar to USB port in that it can connect multiple types of devices that require faster speeds
SCSI port
a special high-speed parallel port that allows you to attach SCSI peripherals
port replicator
an external device that provides connection to peripherals through ports built into the device
docking station
an external device that attaches a mobile computer or device
bus
an electronic channel
system bus
(front side bus) (FSB) port of the motherboard and connects the processor to main memory
backside bus
(BSB) connects the processor to cache
expansion bus
allows the processor to communicate with peripherals
power supply
the component of the system unit that converts the wall outlet AC power into DC power
things used to clean a computer
can of compressed air, anti-static wipes, screen cleaner, computer vacuum, anti-static wristband, small screwdriver
cleaning process for computer
1. turn off and remove battery/ cables from exterior ports
2. compressed air to blow away dust
3. screen cleaner
4. computer vacuum
OR
take it to a professional
