Identify the 4 chambers of the heart |
Right atrium. left atrium right ventricle left ventricle |
Describe the flow of blood through the heart and it's associated blood vessels |
Vena cava > right atrium > right ventricle > pulmonary artery > lungs > pulmonary vein > left atrium > left ventricle > aorta |
Explain the difference in thickness of the walls of the ventricles |
The muscle around the ventricle is much thicker on the left side of the heart than the right side. The wall of the left ventricle is thick because it pumps blood around the body whereas the wall of the right ventricle is less thick because it pumps blood to the lungs |
What supplies the heart with blood |
The coronary artery |
Describe the function of the veins |
Carry blood to the heart from other organs in the body Thin elastic walls and wide area Contains valves Lower pressure |
Describe arteries |
Carry blood away from the heart and into other organs Thick elastic walls which with stand blood being pumped at high pressure |
Describe capillaries |
One cell thick very very narrow channel Networks formed in every organ between arteries and veins Exchange of materials between blood and the living tissues takes place through their thin walls |
Describe the structure and function of red blood |
It is a transporting fluid. It carries vital substances to all part of the body. It contains plasma red blood cells white blood cells and platelets |
Describe haemoglobin |
Contains iron transport oxygen |
Describe the features of a capillary network that allows efficient gas exchange |
Quick exchange of blood between tissues and capillaries because of very thin walls Have a large surface area that allow diffusion to take place as quickly as possible |
