What are the functions of the circulatory system?
Transport - Blood and the heart and circulatory vessels carry a number of things around the body. e.g oxygen, nutrients, waste products
Regulate temperature- Smooth muscle lining the arterioles have the ability to contract and decrease there size (vasoconstrict) or relax and open up ( vasodialate).
Maintain Fluid Balance - There is a constant exchange of fluid between blood and the fluid surrounding cells.
Where is the heart located?
The heart is located in the middle of the thorax. Otherwise known a the Mediastinum.
Describe the outer covering of the heart:
This layer is termed the parietal percardium. It has a fibrous outer layer and an inner serous layer. The second layer produces a thin fluid.
Describe the inner covering of the heart:
The inner covering, covers the heart muscle and is termed the visceral percardium. It is a serous membrane.
What is the Percardial Sac?
The space between the serous layer of the parietal and the visceral. Because of the fluid in the sac little friction is generated when the heart moves with each beat.
What is the myocardium?
It is the heart muscle
What is the endocardium?
The inner lining of the four chambers of the heart.
What separates the right atrium from the left?
The atrial Septum
What separates the right ventricle from the left?
the interventricular septum.
