Cardio Vascular System

Organ system that transports materials such as nutrients, O2 and hormones to body cells and transports CO2 and other wastes from body cells

Blood

A type of connective tissue w/ a fluid matrix called plasma in which red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are suspended

Red Blood Cells

a type of cell that has a membrane-enclosed organelles. All organisms except bacteria and archaea are composed of eukaryotic cells

Red Blood Cells

Contains hemoglobin: Iron Containing molecule, picks up oxygen in the lungs (high concentration) Gives up oxygen in areas low in oxygen, formed in bone marrow, circulates 3-4 months, no molecules- can't repair damage, die at rate of 2million/second, dead/dying removed by circulation by liver

Why do we need a Circulatory System

Plasma

Liquid portion of blood, clear/yellow, mostly made up of water, keeps blood pH-7.4, regulates heat


contains (Nutrients, Wastes, Antibodies, Hormones, Salts, Proteins)

Red Blood Cell Shape

biconcave sphere, as cells mature, they lose Nucleus+ Mitochondria, Almost the entire volume filled with hemoglobin

White Blood Cells

Immune Defense against Viruses, bacteria, ect, make antibodies

RBC smaller, RBC more abundant (except when infection is present), WBC have a nucleus

Platelets

Carries blood towards the heart, usually carries deoxygenated blood, has thinner walls than arteries

Veins solve all the problem of getting blood back to the heart

veins locate next to muscles, valves flaps ensure blood can't flow back

Lymphatic Vessels: Problem

3L more water leaves capillaries then returns> getting fluid back "in Circulation"

Lymphatic Vessels:

dead end at one end and drain at other end, carries lymph

Lymphatic Vessels: Function

Returns Fluid from cells back to circulatory system, fight infections, carry large fat globules that are too large for villi capillaries
