arc

A portion of the circumference of a circle

arc length

The distance along the curved line making up the arc

center

The given point from which all points on a circle are the same distance.

central angle

The angle whose vertex is at the center of a circle and sides are two radii.

chord

A line that links two points on a circle or curve. (pronounced "cord")

circle

A line forming a closed loop, every point on which is a fixed distance from a center point.

circumscribed circle (of a triangle)

Circumscribed literally means "to draw around". A circumscribed circle of a triangle for example is the circle that passes through all three vertices. Usually called the circumcircle.

cyclic quadrilateral

Definition and properties of a quadrilateral inscribed in a circle. Sometimes called a cyclic quadrilateral

diameter

The distance across a circle through its center point.

conic section

a figure formed by the intersection of a plane and a right circular cone. Depending on the angle of the plane with respect to the cone, a conic section may be a circle, an ellipse, a parabola, or a hyperbola.

directrix

a fixed line used in describing a curve or surface.

ellipse

a regular oval shape

equidistant

at equal distances.

focus (of a conic section)

A special point used to construct and define a conic section. A parabola has one focus. An ellipse has two, and so does a hyperbola. A circle can be thought of as having one focus at its center.

hyperbola

An hyperbola looks sort of like two mirrored parabolas, with the two "halves" being called "branches"

inscribed angle

An inscribed angle is an angle formed by two chords in a circle which have a common endpoint.

inscribed quadrilateral

An inscribed quadrilateral is any four sided figure whose vertices all lie on a circle.

inscribed circle

An inscribed circle is the largest possible circle that can be drawn on the inside of a plane figure.

intercepted arc

The intercepted arc is a section of the circumference of a circle.

locus of points

The locus of points at a given distance from a

given point is a circle whose center is the given point and whose radius is the given distance.

major arc

A major arc is an arc of a circle having measure greater than 180 degrees

minor arc

A minor arc is an arc of a circle having measure less than 180 degrees

Parabola

a symmetrical open plane curve formed by the intersection of a cone with a plane parallel to its side.

Point of Tangency

the point at which a line touches an ellipse or circle, assuming that the line only makes contact at one point.

Radian Measure

A measure of a central angle given by the ratio of the arc length to the radius.

radius

a straight line from the center to the circumference of a circle or sphere.

secant

a straight line that cuts a curve in two or more parts

sector

figure enclosed by two radii of a circle or ellipse and the arc between them

semicircle

half of a circle

tangent

a straight line or plane that touches a curve or curved surface at a point, but if extended does not cross it at that point

vertex

In geometry, a vertex (plural: vertices or vertexes) is a point where two or more curves, lines, or edges meet
