pacemaker
send out signals that make the heart muscle contract
ventricle
the 2 lower chambers of the heart that pumps blood out
valve
a flap of tissue that prevents blood from flowing backwards
artery
blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart
capillary
tiny narrow vessels that blood flows into
vein
blood vessles that carry blood back to the heart
aorta
the largest artery in the body
coronary artery
carries blood to the heart itself
pulse
the alternating expansion and the relaaxatio of the artery wall
diffusion
when molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
pressure
the force per unit area
blood pressure

what are the functions of the cardiovascular system?
- carries needed substances to cells
- carries waste products away from cells
what is the function and structure of the heart?
- it pushes blood through the blood vessels
- each side had 2 chambers (upper and lower)
what path does blood take though the cardiovascular system?
- blood travels from the heart to the lungs and then back to the heart
- then throughout the body and returns back to the heart
what are the functions and structures of arteries, capillaries, and veins?
arteries: walls are generally very thick and consists of 3 cell layers
capillaries: materials are exchanged through blood and the bodies cells
veins: blood enters larger blood vessels which are called veins which carries blood back to the heart
how does the cardiovascular system help fight disease?
by having disease fighting blood cells known as white blood cells
how do skeletal muscle help move blood in veins?
the contraction of the muscles
where does the aorta carry blood to?
from the heart to the body
after blood leaves the right atrium, where does it flow to?
right ventricle
what would happen if a person had a hole in the septum?
it would allow oxygen poor blood to mix with oxygen rich blood
