identify and discuss key issues that may be associated with having a chronic illness

the purpose of this exam question is to discuss and identify key issues that may be associated with having a chronic illness. the answer will be related to type 2 diabetes.

1) the world health organisation definition of chronic illness will be provided (and how many types there are )

2) key problems associated with type 2 will be identified and discussed

3) finally potential solutions to reducing the risk of diabetes will be discussed

definition of chronic illness

the world health organisation in 2015 defined a chronic illness as being present for the long term but slow in progressing, they cannot be cured but nor can they be passed form person to person. (defined as an illness that is present for 3 months or more)

categories of chronic illnesses

WHO , 2015

cardiovascular

cancers

respiratory

diabetes

type 2 diabetes is the focus of this exam

factors of risk

pidhany 2015 identified the following as factors that increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes: physical inactivity and an unhealthy diet. these are termed modifiable risk factors that in turn lead towards physiological factors such as high blood sugars and obesity

physical effects of diabetes

NHS in 2014 stated that the physical affects that are common to type 1 and 2 are :

urinating more

being very thirsty

weight loss

cuts and wounds healing slowly

blurred vision

why is type 2 harder to diagnose ?

harder to diagnose type 2 because the symptoms are more mild and develop gradually over a number of years

symptoms occur because

glucose stays in the blood and isn't used up as energy.

psychological affects

Because of theassociated lifestyle changes with diabetics, this can lead to depression, angerand feelings of anxiety. This is due to the illness management, involvingexercise diet and a medication regime. Therefore these psychological affectscan be quite demanding and this leads to feelings of frustration especially ifblood sugar levels remain out of control for long periods of time . (savoy et al. 2007.)

social affects

Diabetes type 2 is more than a chronic illness as for mostpeople it means leading a new way of life. according to Bury 1984 this is termed biographical disruption in which a persons very life has to change and can make them feel isolated especiallyif they are a child at school because of dietary restrictions and the possibleusage of insulin. It affects all social and ethnic groups but in the UK peoplefrom more deprived areas are more likely to develop it because they are moreexposed to the risk factors such as little physical activity, smoking and poordiet. Because of the increasing rates of diabetes there is a need to developpotential solutions to combat it (nordisk, 2009.)

how can it be prevented ?

Diabetes in thecase of type 2 can be preventable, which is why it must be reduced. It can beprevented through behavioral and lifestyle changes such as weight control asobesity is a risk factor, not smoking and undertaking regular exercise becauseit improves insulin and glucoseabsorption. A balanced diet is essential and avoiding sugary and processedfoods and limiting alcohol intake (kent et al, 2005.) So therefore thesolution to prevention of type 2 in thegeneral population is down to keeping active and maintain a healthy diet(Harvard school of public health, 2016.)
