Federal

National, under one nation

Constitution

The plan for the federal government. It describes the rights that the people in the US have and it is the "supreme law of the land."

Republic

A form of government in which people elect representatives to govern the country.

Legislative branch

The law making branch of the government. In the federal government it is called Congress.

Executive branch

A branch of government whose main job is to see that laws passed by the legislative branch are carried out or followed.

Judicial branch

A branch of the government whose main job is to see that laws are carried out fairly.

Checks and balances

A system that gives each branch of government different powers so that each branch can keep the powers of the others from becoming too great.

Veto

To reject a bill and to try to stop it from becoming a law

Bill

a written plan for a new laws.
