What type of rope does EFRS use for all rescue evolutions?
Nylon kernmantle rope
What type of rope does EFRS use for water/ice rescue?
Polyolefin kernmantle rope (floats)
What are the 4 types of ropes?
1. Laid 2. Braided 3. Braid on Braid 4. Kernmantle
What type of rope does EFRS use for utility rope?
Braided and some Kernmantle
What types of stretch are Kernmantle rope?
Low stretch (<5% elongation @ 2kN), Medium stretch (5-10% elongation @ 2kN), High Stretch (>10% elongation @ 2kN)
In low stretch kernmantle rope, what is the strength distribution between kern and mantle?
10-15% Mantle, 85-90% Kern
What are the 3 types of utility rope used by EFRS?
1. Walk-up apartments drop bag (20m x 10mm Nylon Double Braided). 2. Guideline (lifeline) coils (30m x 6mm Nylon/fiberglass Kernmantle). 3. Heavy utility rope (45m x 16mm Nylon Double Braided)
What life safety rope is carried on the Rescue?
2 bags - 1 Main bag (red) and 1 Belay bag (blue) - each has 60m x 13mm rope
What life safety rope is carried on the Technical Rescue?
8 bags - 2 Main bags (red), 2 Belay bags (blue), 2 Haul bags - all 60m x 13mm rope. The last 2 rope bags are 100m x 13mm rope.
How many digits is the ID number for life safety rope?
8 digits (2-diameter, 4-month/year, 2-sequence #)
What are the breaking strengths of the 6, 8, 9, 11.1, and 13mm rope?
6mm=9.7kN, 8mm=14kN, 9mm=16kN, 11.1mm=27kN, 13mm=46kN (Note that breaking strengths will vary dependent on manufacturer, age of the rope, humidity and temperature)
Should rope ever be coiled?
No, coiling of ropes should be avoided. When the rope is coiled, there is a tendency to form loops that will remain in the rope, which will prematurely wear or damage the rope.
How should rope be cleaned?
This is accomplished with running clear water and a brush. The rope is flushed with the water as the brush removes the dirt. If a rope is badly soiled it can be washed in a regular manner, and then placed into a front loading washing machine for cleaning. The machine is placed on a gentle cycle and mild soap is used in the wash cycle. It is best to place the rope in a large mesh bag or daisy chain the rope into large loose coils to protect it from mechanical damage.
What is the proper method to cut rope?
With a commercial electric hot knife
What info should be recorded in a rope log book?
1. Rope manufacturer, & Manufacturer lot number 2. Date of Purchase 2. Date of Service 3. Rope Diameter & length 4. Construction type, material, color 5. Date used 6. Type of use 7. Incident location, or incident number 8. Inspection date, Inspectors name and initials 9. Rope condition and comments 10. Date of washing, type of washing 11. Date of retirement, Retirement level 12. Rope Identification number
What is rope aging?
Aging refers to the natural processes that affect the deterioration of the macromolecular structure of a rope. Aging occurs even if never used. The biggest factor of aging is use.
What are the rules of rope usage?
1. DO NOT STEP ON THE ROPE. 2. Protect the rope at abrasion points. 3. Do not overload a rope. 4. NEVER TOW A VEHICLE with a life safety rope. 5. Do not over bend a rope – strive to maintain a bend radius of 4 times the rope diameter. 6. Do not leave knots tied in a stored rope (unless they are left loosely tied). 7. Store ropes using appropriate methods. 8. Protect a rope from falling objects. 9. Protect the rope from sources of high heat.
What is the diameter and breaking strength of all webbing carried by EFRS?
25 mm tubular webbing, 17.5 kN
What lengths/colors does webbing come in?
Carried in Rescue bags: 2 green (1.5m), 2 yellow (3.5m), 2 blue (4.5m), 2 red (6m). Firefighter personal use: Orange (6m)
What are the 3 basic configurations of rope ties?
Bight, Loop, Round turn
What are the 3 sections of a rope?
Working End, Standing Part, Running End

What are the 3 types of safety ties?

Overhand knot, double overhand knot, Yosemite

What are the types of ties?
Knots, Bends, Hitches
What is the definition of a knot?
a rope intertwined within itself to form a predetermined configuration

What is the definition of a bend?

Is a tie that is used to join two pieces of rope, or webbing, together

What is the definition of a hitch?
configuration of a rope that needs an object within to retain its integrity
What are 4 uses for utility rope?
Tag lines, Tow line, High rise drop bag, Vehicle stabilization
When should a rope be logged?
After each use, inspection, or cleaning
Should you ever raise an air cylinder or fire extinguisher with a rope?
No
