STRUCTURE
TERNARY FORM (ABA)
A = D flat Major
B = C sharp minor (tonic minor)
A = D flat Major
MELODY
SECTION A = Lyrical melody in right hand accompanied by quavers in the bass. Decorated with ornaments - acciaccatura (crushing note) and a turn in bar 11.
Dotted rhythms in the melody line = lighter mood
Chromaticism - uses semiquavers
SECTION B - Melody in the bass (left hand). Longer notes (crotchets and minims)
4 and 8 bar phrases throughout the piece.
WHY IS IT CALLED THE "RAINDROP"?
*Written during a storm to portray the raindrops dripping on the monastry roof.
*Raindrops represented by the repeated quavers on A flat in the A sections and G sharp in the B section - these are the DOMINANTS so the raindrops are DOMINANT PEDAL notes (persistent, repeated notes)
RHYTHM, TEMPO AND METRE (Time Signature)
TIME SIGNATURE = 4/4
Tempo = Sostenuto = sustained and unhurried, to be played legato (smoothly)
RUBATO - mean "robbing" time! Some notes played for longer than written, others shorter.
Dotted rhythm gives Section A a lighter feel than section B.
*SEPTUPLET - 7 notes in the time of one crotchet beat
*DECTUPLET - 10 notes in the time of one crotchet beat
