Matter

Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Chemistry
The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes.
Substance

A single kind of matter that is pure and has a specific set of properties.

Physical property

A characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance.

Chemical property
A characteristic of a pure substance that describes the ability to change into a different substance.
Mixture
Two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combines.
Element

A pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means.

Atom

The basic particle from which all elements are made.

Molecule

A particle made from two or atoms bonded together.

Chemical Bond

The force that holds two atoms together.

Chemical Formula
A formula that gives the elements in a compound and the ratio of atoms.
Compound
A pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combines.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which pure substances are unevenly distributed throughout the mixture.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which substances are evenly distributed throught the mixture.
Solution

An example of a homogeneous mixture, forms when substances dissolve.

Surface Tension

The result of an inward pull among the molecules of a liquid that brings the molecules on the surface closer together; causes the surface to act as if it has a thin skin.

Solid
State of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume.
Liquid

State of matter that has no definite shape, but has a definite volume.

Gas

State of matter with no definite shape or volume.
